In 1929, a massive workers’ strike jeopardized the livelihoods of more than a thousand streetcar conductors in New Orleans. As former carmen themselves, restaurant owners Bennie and Clovis Martin sympathized with the strikers’ plight. So they decided to show their support by handing out free sandwiches to every “poor boy” who walked into their tiny coffee shop. Thus, the po’ boy sandwich was born.

Inspired by this story of generosity, as well as the sandwiches’ addictive flavor, Gwen Bartholomew decided to open up Streetcar Po-Boys. Today, this New Orleans native and her staff dress authentic Leidenheimer’s french bread with fried catfish, fried shrimp, and even fried alligator. Even though the po’ boys are the star of the show, they’re far from the only thing on the menu. Other Crescent City staples include muffaletta sandwiches stuffed with cold cuts and olive tapenade, spicy sausage-and-chicken gumbo, and beignets that are light as air.
